Funeral Planning
Lakewood Catholic Parish Family
St. John Bosco | St. Frances Cabrini
When someone we love passes away, it can be a time of sorrow and uncertainty—but also one of deep faith and hope. As Catholics, we mourn the loss while holding firmly to the promise of eternal life in Christ. The funeral liturgy of the Church is a sacred act of love: a time to remember, to pray, and to entrust our loved one to God’s eternal care.
First Step: Contact the Parish Office
Before making any funeral arrangements with a funeral home or cemetery, we kindly request that you contact the Parish Office at SFC (253) 588-2141 or SJB (253) 582-1028 or email Joe Greey, our Director of Sacred Music and Liturgy, at joe@lakewoodcatholic.org. This ensures that the church, clergy, and our funeral team are available to support you through every step of the process.
Funeral Planning Overview
Scheduling the Funeral
All scheduling must be done through the Parish Office. Together with your family, the funeral home, cemetery staff, and our team, we will determine the date and time for the funeral and burial. Scheduling is based on availability.
Funeral Mass or Memorial Service
You may choose between a Funeral Mass, which must be held in a Catholic church, or a Memorial Service, which can be celebrated in another suitable setting. Our team will help you understand the differences and guide you through the planning process.
Readings and Music
Readings: Families are invited to choose from the Church’s selection of Scripture readings focused on death, resurrection, and eternal life. Parish staff can assist in selecting lectors or family members may read if they are comfortable doing so.
Music: Music is an integral part of the Catholic funeral. Our staff will help schedule musicians who will work directly with your family to select appropriate liturgical music.
Cremation & Church Teaching
The Church allows cremation, provided that the remains are treated with respect and reverently placed in a sacred resting place:
Cremated remains or the body should be buried or entombed in a cemetery, mausoleum, or columbarium.
Scattering ashes or keeping them at home is not permitted under Catholic teaching.
Suggested Offerings
We are committed to serving all families, regardless of financial means. The following are suggested fees to support the parish’s ministers and facilities:
Funeral Honorarium: $300
Priest Stipend: At your discretion
